Life as a journalist can get pretty boring. You're overlooked a lot as celebrities get all the glamour. You are watching TV one day, when you see a man getting interviewed about his recent Bigfoot encounter. How you wished to be the one interviewing...
Suddenly, you get an idea. What if you create fictional cryptids to sell to the press? What if you go to the park during your lunch break and happen to find an umbrella, a log, a paint bucket, and some rocks, all in the shape of the Loch Ness Monster, and then catch it on camera? Are you able to assemble these items in time for your lunch break to end, or will you be beaten by the clock? Find out by playing Cryptid Click!
This is my favorite mechanic of the whole game. Certain items that you hold give you certain powers, so the umbrella allows you the power of flight! I also wrote the animation blueprint and all mechanics.
The ladder is another item you can pick up and use to climb up buildings and hills. You can also place it and let it fall to create a bridge. This took a lot of problem solving, as I could not find tutorials online that had both climbing and physics enabled on ladders.
I felt like the player would have trouble figuring out which items are necessary to create the cryptid, so I added a checklist widget that shows the player what items they need and checks them off when taken to the correct location.
I created the timer widget as well, having it wait until the player places the camera down before counting. It will also track how long it took the player to complete the game at the end. The timer also turns red when 1 minute remains.
We felt that it would add some visual variety to have an icon for every item you could pick up. I drew one for every item, including the camera, log, and paint, and color-coded them based on if they were a heavy or light item. Light items were pink and could be thrown, while heavy items were blue and are just placed on the ground.
